You Fail Me is the 5th studio album by American metalcore band Converge, released on September 21, 2004 past Epitaph Records. The band'due south first release for the characterization, it was produced by Alan Douches and guitarist Kurt Ballou, with the artwork created by vocalist Jacob Bannon.

You Fail Me was the band'south beginning anthology to nautical chart commercially, reaching number 171 on the Billboard 200;[four] it as well reached number 12 on the Top Heatseekers chart[5] and number 16 on the Independent Albums chart.[6]

Groundwork and recording [edit]

Converge began writing for You lot Fail Me afterwards they recorded Jane Doe, they wrote on the road during audio checks of shows.[seven] Much of the material was worked out in a live setting for some time before the band entered the studio. Bannon stated, "it definitely added a new level of refinement to the album cloth."[8] Recording for the album took identify in March 2004, mainly at GodCity Studio, with additional recording at Magpie Audio Design and Witch Physician Studio.

Musical style and themes [edit]

When asked about the concept of the album, Bannon said:

"Later Jane Doe was recorded and released, I thought I was going to feel the emotional burden I was carrying elevator from my shoulders. I had all the puzzle pieces there in forepart of me. Outlets bring closure, or at least that'due south what I thought. With that, I put myself out on the line looking for an emotional resolve with "Jane..." and it never came. When the album was released I didn't experience any better, nothing was changed. My depression kept collapsing on itself. At that point I stopped hoping and searching and I took a long difficult await at my life and at my center. I did a huge amount of soul searching and found so much failure within myself. That discovery was a massive realization. Every bit I started to come across articulate over again, I also saw the failure in friends and loved ones around me. How we neglect each other, and how we fail ourselves. These are songs of failure. And ultimately, surviving self devastation and tragedy we all face in our lives. Musically our only goal was to write an anthology that moved the states and challenged united states. We feel nosotros accomplished that."[8]

Bannon stated the lyrics are "opinionated" and that in that location was definitely a "rage" in the writing not credible in previous albums.[8]

Release and promotion [edit]

You Neglect Me was released on September 21, 2004 by Epitaph Records. Converge's offset headlining tour in support of the album began in September 2004 with Cave In and Between the Cached and Me.[9] On this tour, Converge sold copies of Bannon'due south side-project Supermachiner's anthology Rise of the Great Machine, limited to 50 copies.

On Feb xiv, 2005, a music video was released for the runway "Eagles Get Vultures", directed past Zach Merck.[10]

Y'all Neglect Me Redux [edit]

On June 17, 2016, Converge reissued the album as You lot Fail Me Redux through Epitaph and Deathwish. The band was "never quite content" with the original mix, and had guitarist Kurt Ballou remix the album and Alan Douches remaster it. The reissue besides features updated cover artwork with an inverted color scheme, a black-outlined paw on a white background.[xi] The redux had the same rails list as the vinyl version of the original album.

In an interview with Noisey, Ballou explained why he felt the album needed to be remixed:

"You Fail Me was the concluding fourth dimension Converge did a tape where I wasn't involved in the unabridged engineering procedure. The tape that followed You lot Fail Me, which was No Heroes, was the offset fourth dimension that I both recorded and mixed a Converge tape, with the exception of The Poacher Diaries, which was an EP or a split. Upon completing No Heroes and managing to brand my bandmates happy with the piece of work I did on that record, I idea that I'd really like to get dorsum and remix You Fail Me. I recorded that one, only Matt Ellard, who did most of the engineering work on Jane Doe, was the one who mixed it. Only it was also mixed under less than ideal circumstances. [...] Jane Doe was mixed at Fort Apache on a panel that Matt was familiar with, and we had sufficient time to do those mixes. With You Neglect Me, he came upward and mixed in my studio, which he'd never worked in before, and information technology was an unfamiliar console. He's a very malleable engineer and can work anywhere, simply it probably wasn't his summit choice to mix at my place. Nosotros as well kept having power outages during the mixes. I can't recall the exact details, merely I recollect nosotros booked six days of mixing with him, but he ended upwards having to do it in about iii because he'd come in, work for half an hour, and the ability would go out. Information technology was mixed in the summer nether brownout weather, so we'd take electricity in the morning while it was nevertheless relatively absurd just and then equally things heated upwardly in the afternoon nosotros'd lose power. So he spent a lot of fourth dimension lying on the couch waiting for the ability to come back on. I still think it turned out swell, but there was something about the lack of consistency from song to song and a few other details that made me want to remix it. Sonically, I wanted to arrive fit more logically between Jane Doe and No Heroes."[12]
