Biography

Tiago Rodriguez

Built-in Tiago Rodriguez, little is known near Raoul Silva's early life, though his name indicates he seems to be Portuguese or maybe Brazilian. He later relates a childhood story to a captive James Bond, describing how he spent time with his grandmother on an island that she owned, where she taught him how to rid the island of a rat infestation by capturing them in an oil drum. He utilizes the image of the trapped rats turning to cannibalism as a metaphor for what the life of a spy does to its participants - namely himself. During his years in the Intelligence Service, Silva had worked aslope Olivia Mansfield (who would later be promoted to 'M') in Hong Kong from 1986 to 1997. Mansfield, who was section chief at the time, noticed that the operative had engaged in unauthorized hacking of the Chinese. With the Chinese closing in on Rodriguez and the upcoming transition of Hong Kong from a British colony to a special authoritative region of Mainland china (a transfer of sovereignty) that yr, Mansfield sacrificed Rodriguez in substitution for 6 agents held past the Chinese government and a smooth transition.

During his 5 months of captivity, torture and imprisonment by the Chinese, Silva attempted to take his own life using a Hydrogen Cyanide implant in 1 of his molars as a standard means for MI6 agents to avoid capture past the enemy. The suicide attempt failed, horrifically scarring Silva both mentally and physically and he claimed it "burned all of [his] insides". The botched attempt is shown to have severely damaged his upper jaw so that his left cheek is sunken, leaving him with a drooping eyelid, bittersweet eyes and a slurred raspy speech. Silva'southward Hispanic tan is replaced with a pale demeanor. He is also shown to have rotten decomposable gums and all but a few teeth have melted abroad with the few remaining having been mutilated and deformed, requiring Silva to wear a prosthesis to replace the teeth and inflate his left cheek and too to presumably help him breathe. The faux teeth might have some sort of inhalers and even a possible electrolarynx. When this prosthesis is taken out, his face is disfigured.

Planning his Revenge

Years afterwards, he improves his hacking skills and builds a criminal empire. He takes former prostitute Sévérine under his wing, but the merciful man she thinks he is, is really an illusion. He causes a fake leak at a chemical plant on the island of Hashima in club to merits it as his base of operations of operations. It is implied that he rigged the 2011 national Ugandan elections and besides cripples economies around the world, through manipulating the stock marketplace. His numerous cyber exploits grant him near-limitless money, power and resource. Past the fourth dimension he came into contact with 007, he is a force to be reckoned with.

In 2012, MI6 faces a major crisis when the mercenary Patrice, Silva's assassin, steals a difficult drive containing the identities of every NATO agent currently in the field and delivers it to Silva. (After this, he is shown in the opening sequence of Skyfall equally a silhouette) Silva ensures that M was at the centre of the crisis past decrypting the drive using her personal computer remotely, and sending her a message advising her to "think on her sins" before bombing her part (knowing that she isn't inside), killing eight MI6 agents in the procedure, bringing her under force per unit area from the authorities to resign. He and so begins posting videos online revealing the identities of the undercover field agents, threatening that he would post five more every week. Afterward, as M met with Gareth Mallory to discuss what to do with Raoul Silva, they watches the news which showed agents being executed in an abased warehouse (later revealed to be his Hashima lair).

Despite the injuries he sustains on a botched mission to retrieve the drive from Patrice, and ignoring the poor results of his functioning evaluations, M dispatches James Bond to Shanghai after receiving a tip from the CIA well-nigh Patrice's next contract. Patrice has been assigned by Silva to kill an art critic, which he does. Though Bond is unsuccessful in learning Silva's identity after Patrice fall to his death from a skyscraper, he is able to locate Séverine in a casino in Macau, who acts as Patrice's contact, after finding a gambling chip belonging to the casino in Patrice'due south example. Upon making contact with Sévérine, she badly asks that he kill Silva.

Meeting James Bond

Silva introduces himself to James Bail

"What is this if not betrayal? She'south sending you off to me knowing you are non ready, knowing you will probable die. Mommy was very bad!"
― Raoul Silva to James Bail [src]

Silva became enlightened when James Bond boarded Sévérine's yacht at night, which departed to a remote island off the coast of Macau Hashima Island - the former chemical plant which Silva had taken for himself by issuing a false alarm declaring a major leak, prompting a consummate evacuation and quarantine of the island. On the island, Silva's men accept Sévérine away and restrain Bond in a chair at the end of a long warehouse filled with Silva'southward electronic equipment. Silva enters to confront Bond, revealing his erstwhile status as an MI6 operative and gruesomely comparing Bond and himself to two tortured rats as a effect of M's deceptive nature.

Silva is seemingly defeated by James Bond

Taking Bond outside, Silva then has Sévérine tied to a collapsed statue, placing a small-scale drinking glass of alcohol on her head and forcing Bond to try to knock it off her head with a shot from an one-time single-shot flintlock pistol. Though Bond tries to spare her past aiming to her side, missing both she and the glass, Silva takes up his own pistol and shot her directly in the chest, killing her and causing the glass to fall from her caput. As Silva contemplates killing Bond, the spy is able to incapacitate and kill all of his men with Silva unable to retaliate, having no bullets left in his pistol. Before Silva has a chance to escape, a fleet of helicopters that Bond has signaled prior to getting to the island finally arrives, leading to Silva being captured and brought to England.

Captivity and escape

Silva being held as a prisoner in MI6'southward base of operations

Back in England, Silva is bars within MI6'due south undercover emergency headquarters, which they had retreated to post-obit the explosion in Yard's office. When K confronts him in his cell, he expresses his hatred for her afterward his capture by the Chinese and his failed suicide attempt, and his determination to bring about onto her downfall. When she is almost to go out, he shows her what the Hydrogen Cyanide did to him by removing his prosthetic dentures. A shocked, disturbed and remorseful Grand leaves in horror as Silva grins with a gaping jaw and laughs maniacally later inserting the prosthetic back into his face. Meanwhile, Q acquires Silva'due south figurer and decrypts a complex algorithm on its bulldoze, with the password being "Granborough" which unlocks to form a detailed electronic map of underground London.

Silva's disfigurement being revealed to M

In connecting Silva'south computer to his own (while trying to decrypt and retrieve the list), Q inadvertently allows Silva to hack MI6's systems using a virus, disabling the MI6'south defence system and opening the M16's electronically locked doors in the base, including the door to Silva'southward cell, which enabled his release from his cell, killing the guards that was watching and guarding his prison cell in the procedure and allowing him to escape into the subway through a floor grate, with Bond pursuing him.

Silva making his swift escape via the train

Realizing that Silva has always been one stride ahead of them the whole time, his capture past MI6 and subsequent escape having been planned years in advance (with SPECTRE possibly having had a mitt in this), Bond deduces that he plans to travel along the subway and sally at the scene of a public inquiry into M's actions regarding the stolen difficult drive, with an intention to kill Yard at the public inquiry. Silva is alee of Bail, having his henchmen deliver him the uniform of a Metropolitan Police Lawman, and riding the Tube to the public inquiry. Subsequently a chase at the station nearly where M's deposition is taking place, Silva is successfully able to evade Bond at the cease of the chase by using his police radio to detonate an underground bomb that causes an incoming train to derail, almost crushing Bond.

Silva trying and failing to assassinate Thousand

He then makes his manner to the public inquiry at the courthouse building, with a small number of his henchmen (all dressed as Metropolitan Police officers), killing three Metropolitan Police officers guarding the entrance of the courthouse building, as he storms in at the court and firing frantically at M (while the rest of Silva's henchmen shoots the witnessing MI6 officials, M'southward bodyguards, research members, parliamentary ministers, journalists, and the Metropolitan Constabulary officers present at the public inquiry), but misses when Gareth Mallory takes the bullet that was meant for her.

Silva furiously shoots back at James Bond

He never actually manages to hit M, equally he panics when Bail suddenly arrives at the scene, who kicks a gun over to Eve Moneypenny and allows her to join him in returning fire. After Mallory joins them (with the former taking a expressionless police force officer'southward Glock 17) and they manage to shoot down the rest of Silva's henchmen, Bond shoots the room'southward burn extinguishers, creating a smokescreen and allowing One thousand and Bail to escape with the assistance of Mallory and Neb Tanner, while Silva leaves in disgust (killing a hiding parliamentary minister in the procedure) with his remaining henchmen out of the courthouse building.

Skyfall

Silva returns to impale James Bond and K

Later on Silva flees the scene, Bond takes Yard and leaves London in his Aston Martin DB5, knowing that Silva and his men volition come back in full force after his long-planned strategy failed him. Assigning Q to leave a complex electronic trail that merely Silva will be able to follow, Bail takes M to the Skyfall Lodge, his remote childhood domicile in Scotland, intending to atomic number 82 Silva into a trap. With help from the house'due south gamekeeper, Kincade, Bond and M rig the business firm with a range of booby traps and explosives (despite of the iii being lightly armed), and end just equally the first wave of armed henchmen (possible SPECTRE soldiers) begins to approach from a hilltop. Though virtually of the henchmen are hands dispatched past the traps and past Bail and Kincade, one of them manages to wound M with a shot to the hip before being killed past Bond.

Bond notices that Silva was not among the gunmen, and having already used all of the traps, he tells Kincade to evacuate Yard to the nearby chapel via a tunnel beneath the house. Dark falls, and a second wave of men, including Silva, arrive in a helicopter. The helicopter flies around the house shooting through the barricaded windows continuously earlier landing outside of the manor. Silva strides out of the helicopter with his band of mercenaries and throws incendiary grenades into the mansion as he makes his mode to the manor house. After throwing more incendiary grenades through windows of the manor business firm and taunting Bond, he circles the estate firm and waves his arm in the direction of the Aston Martin. The helicopter then shoots it and blows up the Aston Martin, much to Silva's sadistic please and to Bail's angered await.

Silva leaves after destroying Skyfall Club

Upon seeing his Aston Martin being destroyed at the hands of Silva, Bond finds a pair of gas tanks and a stick of dynamite, as he calorie-free a match onto the fuse of the dynamite existence placed onto the gas tanks, timing them to explode as he escapes through the tunnel himself. Silva and his henchmen circle the house earlier it explodes into a massive and gigantic fireball explosion, which manages to impale and incinerate the majority of the Silva'southward henchmen and causes the helicopter to crash onto the manor firm, adding more further causalities onto the remainder of Silva'due south men manning inside the helicopter, with an angered and shocked Silva looking on in horror before being temporarily shocked and knocked out by the blast in the procedure. (Silva is presumed by the audience to have been blown up).

Death

Silva dies with a combat knife in his back.

"You're hurt. Y'all're injure! What have they done to you? What have they done to you? Costless usa both. With the same bullet. Only you can do information technology. Do it! Do information technology!"
― Raoul Silva to Thou [src]

In the wake of Skyfall Guild's explosion, Silva got upward and looked at the blazing wreckage he is in. Looking across the moors, a crazed and determined Silva spotted Kincade'due south flashlight within the distance with the latter escorting M towards the chapel, and he stumbled in a pursuit afterwards them, but not before ordering his ii remaining surviving henchmen to eliminate James Bond, to forestall the latter from pursuing him. Afterward, Bond emerged from the tunnel in pursuit, having survived the blaze of the explosion that reached the tunnel, incapacitating one of Silva'south 2 remaining henchmen by fly-boot him, resulting in his neck being snapped. Bond purposely fell through the frozen ice on a lake while fighting the other gunman, while Silva connected chasing afterwards M.

Having left Bail backside, this had allowed Silva to reach the chapel and arroyo Yard while Kincade is coincidentally out of sight and upon the latter coming out, with Silva firing a alarm shot at the jamb of the side-room of the chapel and holding Kincade at gunpoint, alarm the latter of not to interfere equally the latter raised his hands in fright. Despite his hatred for her, Silva appeared worried when he saw M'due south bleeding and fatal wound, but nonetheless held a gun onto her head. When he struggled to execute her himself, he forced the gun into her hand, placing his head beside hers and demanding that she kill both him and herself with a unmarried bullet through their heads. At this point, Silva's psyche seems to take shattered fifty-fifty more.

Even so, Bond arrived at the last minute and hurled his begetter'due south old combat knife into Silva's back, causing him to scream in an agonizing hurting. As Silva made his last steps, Bond declared himself to the terminal rat continuing in reference to Silva's before speech communication at Macau Hashima Island. Eventually, Silva kneeled downwards at floor of the chapel, succumbing to his wounds at the back as he loses consciousness, then complanate and lay dead onto Bond's feet, merely his plan ultimately succeeded in the stop, equally moments afterwards, Thousand complanate in Bond'southward arms and died from her before wounds, with a watching Kincade taking off his hat in respect onto the passing of 1000.

Spectre

Throughout Spectre, Silva is frequently referenced. The character appears during the flick's opening credits sequence in shattered glass alongside the erstwhile Grand, Le Chiffre and Vesper Lynd. During the grade of the motion-picture show, a connection is established between Silva and SPECTRE. As Q analyses Marco Sciarra's SPECTRE ring, the technology links the object to Silva along with several other antagonists from previous films, including Le Chiffre, Dominic Greene and Patrice. He is also mention by SPECTRE leader Ernst Stavro Blofeld as one of his connections. The last reference to Silva appears in the movie's climax when 007 is kidnapped and taken to the before long-to-be demolished SIS Building. A impress-out of his face adorns one of several cardboard cut-outs in the building'south at present dilapidated shooting range. The irreparable damage he caused to the building is clearly shown.

Physical appearance

Raoul Silva was a young, tall and a bit muscular man with peroxide long blonde hair which was parted to the right and blue optics; both were probably not natural. He wore a prosthetic upper jaw to muffle the impairment washed by the failed cyanide sheathing; without it, his left cheek collapsed, causing his lower eyelid to droop too, and he was left with but a few stubs of teeth which were grey with disuse.

In his first advent, he wore a cream jacket, a Prada tile impress wearing apparel shirt, brown waistcoat and trousers, and brown shoes. After escaping his cell at MI6, he bearded himself equally a Metropolitan police force officeholder. In the final showdown at the Skyfall Lodge, he has a long trenchcoat, a advice earpiece, a blackness shirt and combat boots. His weapons of choice include explosives, a Glock 13, a Steyr M9-A1 (during the Skyfall attack), a helicopter gunship, a subway train, and antique flintlock dueling pistols (used to impale his lover Sévérine in a "William Tell" game he forces Bond to participate in).

Personality

When he was working under M, Raoul Silva had a deep admiration for the future MI6 head to the point of because her a female parent effigy, and equally a result, he experienced her betrayal equally a serious trauma that destroyed him psychologically, hence his determination to play with her before killing her with his own hands (he even refused to let one of his subordinates do it in his place). This event as well generated a great infantile anger in Silva, which pushed him to dedicate his life to ship the wave back to M, but also against his country that he had sworn to protect and that he at present considered guilty of the sufferings he endured nether torture during his captivity.

In the present, Silva was a powerful, feared and ruthless terrorist whose simply concern is to see M die, fifty-fifty if it means risking his own life to exercise so. He indeed oftentimes revealed an apparent disregard for the prophylactic of his own life, assuasive himself to exist captured by Sister in a bid to exact revenge on M. Though he maintained an intensely strong hatred towards the MI6 caput, he was also conflicted about her. He was convinced that he had survive to "look into [her] eyes 1 last time". During their confrontation in the MI6 cell room where he was held after his initial capture, Silva grew increasingly more agitated and deranged as she refused to show any remorse or regret for her actions, especially when she refused to use his real proper name. When he beginning met Bond, he also blamed M personally for compelling him towards a path that could easily impale him, quite ignoring his own willingness to exercise so. Silva called her "Mommy" or "Mother" multiple times, and he ultimately could not bring himself to personally impale her - to the bespeak when he has her at the signal of a gun, and tin can't bring himself to pull the trigger. He had a sarcastic wit, shown constantly against Bond during their boxing of wits, fifty-fifty using Bond'due south own words confronting him. Silva was also an overly dramatic, flighty, flamboyant, peculiarly quirky, and colorful homo with a flair for theatrics.

Despite his chaotic methods, Silva maintained an air of calm and often handled things with ease - even subsequently his men were killed by Bond, and later held at gunpoint by the latter, Silva remained completely reserved and even managed to mock him. He was oftentimes jovial, rather refined and expressed himself with a polite and deceptively benevolent linguistic communication. Silva also seemed to have an appreciation for classical music, notably Boum by Charles Trenet. During his set on on Skyfall Social club, he had outfitted his assault helicopter with nearly a dozen loudspeakers - solely for playing rock music during the assault (namely Smash Boom, by The Animals), for the purposes of intimidation and being a nuisance. Every bit Bail put it, he "ever [had] to brand an entrance." He was charismatic and very strategic, thinking of all of his plans in full item and trying not to get out anything to adventure, or else was very skillful at improvising. Silva was extremely intelligent, able not only to outsmart M, but Q and Bond every bit well, fifty-fifty going so far to employ them as office of his program while playing with their nerves. Even M, who has ever been disquisitional of Bond, described Silva as 'a brilliant agent'. Despite beingness revealed to accept been funded by Ernst Stavro Blofeld, Silva proved himself to be master at puppeteering every bit well. Despite being a pawn, he certainly was not a puppet. Finally, he appeared to be sexually ambiguous; he kissed Sévérine and also made strong overtures toward Bond, though whether he actually meant information technology and was bisexual or just doing information technology to mess with him is left up for argue.

It has been theorized that Silva had borderline personality disorder, which is characterized past intense fear of abandonment, emotional extremes, and an unstable sense of identity. He has shown sociopathic behavior, including a laid-back reaction to dangerous or sadistic situations, a lack of compassion towards fifty-fifty his allies (in particular Sévérine, whom he killed without whatever remorse after his expose), and above all, he was specially sadistic towards M - earlier exploding MI6, he sent a computerized message mocking her, and later on taunted her with unleashing names of NATO agents on YouTube to intensify the fact that she had failed.

Quotes

""Recall on your sins!"."
― Silva's message to M. [src]
""Hullo, James. Welcome. Do you like the island? My grandmother had an island. Nothing to boast of. You could walk around it in an hr. But still, it was, it was a paradise for us. One summertime, we went for a visit and discovered the place had been infested with rats! They'd come on a fishing boat and gorged themselves on coconut. And so how do you become rats off an isle? Hmm? My grandmother showed me. Nosotros cached an oil drum and hinged the chapeau, and so wired kokosnoot to the chapeau as bait. And the rats would come for the kokosnoot and... they would fall into the drum. And afterward a month, yous accept trapped all the rats. Merely what do you practise then? Throw the drum into the ocean? Burn information technology? No. Y'all just leave it. And they begin to get hungry. And one past one... they start eating each other until there are only two left. The two survivors. And then what? Practise yous impale them? No. You have them and release them into the copse. But now they don't eat kokosnoot anymore. Now they simply consume rat. You have changed their nature. The two survivors, this is what she made united states of america!"."
― Silva's "Last 2 Rats" monologue [src]
"If yous wanted, you lot can pick your ain secret missions as I do. Proper noun it. Proper name it! Destabilize a multinational past manipulating stocks. Easy. Interrupt transmissions from a spy satellite over Kabul. Done! Hmm. Rig an election in Uganda. All to the highest bidder. (Bond: Or a gas explosion in London?) But betoken-and-click."
― Silva explaining his listing of cyberterrorist deeds to Bond. [src]
"They kept me for 5 months, in a room with no air. They tortured me, and I protected your secrets, I protected you, but they fabricated suffer, and endure... and endure. And and so I realized, information technology was y'all, who betrayed me. Yous betrayed me, and then I but have ane thing left; my cyanide sheathing."
― Silva explaining his imprisonment to Chiliad. [src]
"Exercise it, do it. Only y'all can do it, do it."
― Silva's last words as he convincing M to impale him and before existence stabbed by Bail. [src]

Trivia

  • Only known on-screen as "Silva", some officially licensed merchandise such as Rittenhouse's 2013 Skyfall trading cards refer to the graphic symbol as "Raoul Silva". The name appears to originate with Neal Purvis and Robert Wade's offset draft screenplay (dated November 2010[3]), wherein he was "a villain called Raoul Sousa (inverse to Silva)"[4].
  • Discussing his grapheme prior to Skyfall's release, actor Javier Bardem described Raoul Silva every bit "more than a villain". His co-star, Daniel Craig stated that Bond has a "very of import relationship" to Silva.[v]
  • In casting the role, manager Sam Mendes admitted that he lobbied hard for Bardem to accept the function as he recognized the potential for the character to become i of the almost memorable characters in the franchise, so wanted to create "something [the audience] may consider to have been absent from the Bond movies for a long fourth dimension".[6] He felt that Bardem was i of the few actors up to the chore of condign "colourless" and existing inside the world of the film every bit something more than than a function of the plot.[7]
  • In preparing for the role, Bardem had the script translated into his native Spanish in order to better-empathize his grapheme, which Mendes cited as being a sign of the actor's commitment to the film.[8]
  • Bardem dyed his pilus blond for the part after brainstorming ideas with Mendes to come up up with a distinct visual wait for the character.[nine]
  • The character's YouTube identity "Vials"[1] is an anagram for "Silva".
  • Javier Bardem confirmed that Silva has Portuguese ancestry during an interview.[2]
  • His starting time proper noun "Tiago" is a Portuguese equivalent of the name "James".[10]
  • Javier Bardem is the first Spanish player to portray a chief antagonist in a 007 film.
  • Silva is like to several other Bail villains:
    • Francisco Scaramanga: Both have some form of Hispanic heritage, and are presented as being Bond's equal. Both feel they share a certain special connection with James, believing themselves to be ii of a kind (Scaramanga highlighting how, "We are the best" in their murderous field/Silva well-nigh how M made them the "2 survivors"). Both cinematic characters have isle lairs near China, and a fearful mistress (Andrea Anders/Sévérine) who, after conspiring with 007, are shot by the villain. The literary Scaramanga is too sexually ambiguous.
    • Alec Trevelyan: Both are ex-agents who had once served MI6 and are essentially "Anti-Bonds". Both seek justice for a expose (Britain handing the Trevelyans to the Soviets/MI6 trading Silva to the Chinese). Afterward leaving MI6, both first their own criminal rings, and major components of their plans involve great use of computer hacking.
    • Elektra King/Renard: Both are motivated past some wrong that M had committed against them in the by and intended to impale her. In both cases, One thousand took the option most dictated past duty rather than pity or loyalty. Both Elektra/Renard and Silva remotely set off explosions in the Vauxhall Building, the official headquarters of MI6.
  • Despite existence the principal antagonist, Silva doesn't appear onscreen until halfway through the movie.
  • He is the beginning main villain in the reboot series to exist killed past James Bail. (Le Chiffre was killed by Mr. White, Dominic Greene was killed by an unidentified assassin, Mr. White committed suicide, and Blofeld temporarily survived and was incarcerated). Bond later accidentally killed Blofeld with Heracles, and then he killed Lyutsifer Safin.
  • Silva is besides the first primary villain in the reboot series to have onscreen kills.
  • He is currently the only Bond villain whose plans were ultimately successful, namely humiliating MI6 and killing Thousand as revenge for abandoning him (although the latter is a posthumous victory equally Bond kills him before Grand succumbs to her injuries).
  • The German actor Michael Pink was originally going to play Silva, before Bardem was bandage. Notwithstanding, Pinkish would become on and play as one of Silva's henchmen.
  • The whiskey Silva pours out for Bond is a l-yr-erstwhile MacAllan, a reference to the fact that Skyfall was the 50th ceremony flick.
  • Upon the picture show's release, Javier Bardem received widespread global critical acclaim for his performance, and role equally a menacing Bail villain. Many 007 fans and critics noted strong similarities with Heath Ledger's The Joker from Christopher Nolan's The Night Knight (2008).
  • Silva is something of a rarity for the James Bond serial in that, dissimilar the majority of the other main Bail villains, including all the other main ones in the reboot series starring Daniel Craig so far, he is genuinely a tragic effigy to some extent who was driven to revenge due to being sold out past M despite his genuine loyalty and drive to be a good, proactive amanuensis when he was with MI6, and as a result, was tortured to the point that he was driven to a failed attempt at suicide before coming to the conclusion that getting revenge on M was all he had left to alive for. Therefore, unlike most other Bond villains, who probably would take turned out the way they did regardless of their circumstances, Silva is a rare case in the franchise of someone who'south turn to villainy possibly, if not probably, could have been avoided had K handled the situation differently, making him one of Bond'southward unmarried most 3-dimensional, fleshed out and humanized adversaries in the whole series, rather than just some other foe who's evil but considering they're a psychopath and they can be.
